With the warmer weather in Connecticut comes more pedestrians on sidewalks and streets. While drivers must always be vigilant so that they are not the cause of a pedestrian accident, warmer weather frequently leads to more opportunities for accidents to happen.
This is the situation that unraveled last month in Oregon. A man who was intent on raising awareness about a soccer-related charity had just left on what was to be a 10,000-mile trip to Brazil for next summer’s World Cup. The man decided to walk there, dribbling a soccer ball for the entire length of his trip.
However, just days after his trip began, it ended when he was hit from behind by a man driving a pickup truck. The man was walking alongside the Oregon Coast Highway south of Portland when he was hit. The 42-year-old man died as a result of his injuries. Stories about his prematurely ended trek might mean that his cause will receive more notice, but the man will not be around to experience the publicity himself.
Fortunately, police were able to identify the driver of the pickup relatively quickly, which led to his arrest. The man was charged with criminally negligent homicide as a result of the pedestrian’s death.
