Motorcyclists are particularly at risk when involved in a motor vehicle accident, as they have virtually no protection against other larger vehicles. This is why drivers must be especially careful when navigating around those on two-wheeled vehicles. When they are not careful, this can lead to critical injuries or even death in Connecticut as the result of an auto accident.
A 90-year-old woman recently was charged with negligent homicide following a car crash involving a motorcycle. The woman apparently turned her vehicle into the path of the motorcycle driven by a 34-year-old man. The motorcyclist was going in the opposite direction on a local roadway in New Haven.
The biker lost his life as a result of the crash. The woman at the time was arrested on a warrant. She then was charged with negligent homicide and incorrectly making a turn.
The woman must now respond to the criminal charges filed against her. However, she might have to endure other legal issues as well, as the deceased motorcyclist’s family may choose to file a wrongful death suit against her. They may seek financial damages linked to the case, which can help to cover the victim’s funeral costs, medical expenses and other financial losses resulting from the fatal auto accident. If the woman ends up being convicted in criminal court, proof of the conviction may be offered to prove her liability in civil court. The court in Connecticut will determine monetary damage claims if and when her financial responsibility is established according to our state’s wrongful death laws.
