Two football players with the Sheehan High School team suffered serious injuries when they were involved in a single-car crash on Friday, March 16.
A Wallingford Police Department spokesperson notes that the teenage athletes had just wrapped up a meeting for their football team and were heading home when the crash occurred. According to witnesses, the driver of a Toyota Scion TC was seen veering off the road near the intersection of northbound Route 68 and Highland Avenue.
When emergency crews arrived at the crash scene, they worked for some time to extricate both teens from the vehicle they’d been riding in. Both were transported to the hospital suffering in critical condition.
The vehicle’s 16-year-old driver was released from the hospital by the following Monday. He suffered multiple fractures in the crash. His 15-year-old teammate hasn’t been as lucky. He remains hospitalized at Yale New Haven Hospital after having apparently suffered a head injury. His condition has since been upgraded to stable condition.
It’s not yet clear what may have led the teen driver to leave the roadway. Some factors traffic crash investigators are likely considering are speed, something having entered the motorist’s line of vision and him having been forced off the roadway by another vehicle.
In the police spokeswoman’s statement, she notes that investigators are still speaking to witnesses to gain a clearer picture of the series of events that preceded the crash. She notes that charges may be filed depending on the outcome of their investigation.
