The driver of a medical taxi was seriously injured when his work vehicle was struck as he transported a co-worker and a juvenile patient in the early morning hours of Monday, April 16. The initial crash occurred just before 3:43 a.m., right out front of the First Step Childcare & Learning Center along Sherman Avenue in New Haven.
According to witness statements taken at the scene of the crash, a car being driven by a 15-year-old motorist apparently first crashed into the medical taxi. The impact of that crash caused the vehicle to roll over.
The motorist apparently didn’t stop after crashing into the taxi though. Police instead say that the driver continued driving for another block. As the teen drove that short distance down the road, another vehicle was stuck head-on. Police investigators suspect that the teen also sideswiped another two cars along the way.
Emergency crews summoned to the crash scene quickly tended to the occupants of the medical taxi. Its driver was in critical condition once extricated from the vehicle. He was transported to Yale’s New Haven Hospital where he was admitted to its surgical intensive care unit. As for the teen motorist, he suffered an apparent broken femur in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Although both the juvenile, who’d been riding in the medical taxi, and the driver’s co-worker had both suffered injuries in the rollover crash, it’s unclear how severe those injuries may have been.
Crash scene investigators continued investigating the crash until later in the afternoon on Monday. Police haven’t yet said whether the teen may have been impaired at the time of the crash or whether charges are pending against him for his role in causing it.
