A 29-year-old summer worker for the City of East Haven suffered serious injuries when they picked up an apparent explosive device early in the afternoon on Monday, July 30, near D.C. Moore School.
Calls first started coming in to police dispatch just before 1:15 p.m. It’s around that same time that residents living along Mansfield Drive heard an explosion. Another resident who lives on Hoop Pole Lane reported hearing an unusual loud bang, but she couldn’t easily detect what it sounded like.
Another local resident also reported hearing what sounded like a loud explosion. Soon thereafter she heard sirens moving closer to where the source of the noise. The woman then spoke with a friend who had a police scanner. She was told it was believed the sound may have come from a firework.
Emergency crews who responded to the scene of the incident found the city worker with serious injuries to his abdomen and both of his hands. He was quickly whisked away for treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the area.
The East Haven fire marshal’s office is being assisted by the Connecticut fire marshal’s office in the continuing investigation into the cause of the explosion. Preliminary evidence suggests that the victim may have been picked up some type of firework immediately before the incident occurred.
An East Haven police spokesperson declined to disclose what type of work the worker was doing for the city at the time of the incident.
