The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer warning earlier this month. They described how routine tests that they’d performed showed that some of Claire’s cosmetics had traces of the cancer-causing asbestos in them. Claire’s, a popular mall retailer that offers jewelry, makeup and other accessories for young kids, denies their claims.
In the FDA’s consumer warning alert issued on March 6, they outlined how they first determined that some of the company’s products were contaminated with asbestos back in 2017. They immediately recalled Claire’s contour palette (batch/lot number: 04/17), their eye shadows (batch/lot number: 08/17) and their compact powder (batch/lot number: 07/15).
The press release describes how the federal agency regularly has a third-party laboratory test makeup products that may put the public’s health at risk. They note that one of these routine tests resulted in them discovering the presence of asbestos in these three products.
In that same press release, they detailed how while most retailers comply with the recall, Claire’s refused. They noted that, since they lack the authority to issue a mandatory recall, their only option was to issue a consumer warning.
After the consumer warning was released, Claire’s itself issued its own statement letting the public know that it values the health and safety of its customers. They noted that they’d removed the three talc-based products from their shelves and that they’d accept returns of any of them at their stores.
In that same statement, they detailed how they’d had their own independent laboratory test the products and that they complied with all existing cosmetic safety regulations. They noted that what was identified as asbestos is actually another type of fiber. They noted that they tried to address this with the FDA, but that they insisted on issuing the consumer warning.
